What are the most affordable cities for international students in Canada?
by Arunachalam
Canada is renowned for its top-notch education, offering low tuition fees and globally recognized degrees. With a thriving community of international students drawn to its world-class universities and diverse array of courses, Canada has become a destination of choice. However, when traveling to Canada to study, it's important to consider the cost of living in your chosen city. To make the most of your budget, it's crucial to know which Canadian cities are the most affordable for international students.
In this blog, we'll explore some of the most budget-friendly cities in Canada for the discerning international student.
Montreal, Quebec
When it comes to students seeking for a location with a tight budget, Quebec is among the most affordable regions in Canada. Because it is home to numerous famous colleges and universities, Montreal is referred to as a university town.
The region is referred to as the McGill Ghetto since so many students from McGill University are located nearby. A one-bedroom apartment rental costs about CAD 1290 per month.
Many international students live in Plateau, an area with quirky boutiques, cafes, and inexpensive eateries that serve delectable food.
Sherbrooke, Quebec
Sherbrooke is an unofficial student town in Quebec and is located around 160 kilometres from Montreal. The eight academic institutions in the area are home to about 40,000 students. A one-bedroom apartment costs less than CAD 800, which is 15.6% less than the national average for living expenses. Quebec is one of Canada's top provinces for foreign students.

Moncton, New Brunswick
Despite being the largest city in New Brunswick, Moncton has one of the lowest costs of living rates. A one-bedroom apartment costs C$835 per month on average, which is 6.3% less expensive than the national average. Like many other east coast Canadian cities, Moncton is a welcome environment for international students, and the area has recently experienced a considerable influx of international students from different nations.
Ottawa, Ontario
The University of Ottawa and Carleton University, two of Canada's most esteemed universities, are located in the nation's capital, Ottawa. Areas like Little Italy, Osgoode Street, Centretown, and Old Ottawa South are popular places for students to find accommodation. An average one-bedroom apartment costs about 1,200 CAD.
Abbotsford, British Columbia
Due to Vancouver's exorbitant cost of living, British Columbia is recognised as a costly province to reside in. However, several of the Pacific province's cities are quite reasonably priced for students. One of the cheapest cities is Abbotsford, which is the largest by area in BC. The cost of living in Abbotsford is 3.6% less than the national average, making it the most affordable city in the province.
Calgary, Alberta
Calgary, the largest city in Alberta, is home to several of Canada's top colleges. One of Canada's top design and art colleges, the Alberta College of Art and Design, encourages students interested in a creative programme to sign up. 800 CAD is the price for a one-bedroom apartment.
International students in Kingston can enjoy more affordable dining options, transportation, and recreational options while still feeling right at home. The cost of living in Kingston is also less than the national average. Students can also submit applications to esteemed institutions including Queen's University, St. Lawrence University, and the Royal Military College of Canada.
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Despite being the largest city in Saskatchewan, Saskatoon is not so popular with the international students. The majority of overseas students have a hazy understanding of Saskatchewan province and believe it to be one of Canada's coldest and remotest regions. But the University of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Polytechnic College are located in Saskatoon. Among the main Canadian cities, Saskatoon has one of the lowest costs of living. Thus, the cost of housing, bills, food, and taxes is lower for students who attend college in Saskatoon.
Regina, Saskatchewan
The capital and largest city of Saskatchewan, Canada, is Regina. The city expanded quickly after World War II to become a significant manufacturing, distribution, and transportation centre for a sizable agricultural region. The city is well connected to all major railroads, including the Trans-Canada Highway and Regina International Airport. It is also quite accessible. Oil, natural gas, potash refining, food manufacturing, and the rich grasslands and mineral resources all contribute to its economy.
Additionally, Regina city is home to industries that are actively employing, including wholesale and retail, healthcare, agriculture, and educational services. A single person's monthly expenses, including rent, come to about C$1,500, and if they share a room, they fall to C$1,200.
Conclusion
As the cost of living varies depending on the city and the location of the university, the university you choose for your studies will determine the most accurate estimated living expenses in your desired Canadian destination.
The estimated cost of living will depend upon the university you apply for as the cost of living differs by city and university location. If you need further help in making your choice, please get in touch with our experts at MWT Education Consultancy.
