Australian Nursing Registrations for Overseas Nurses
In order to work as a Nurse or Midwife in Australia, you must apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is the body that assesses all applications for registration from internationally qualified Nurses and Midwives on behalf of the NMBA.

B.Sc. / Post B.Sc. / M.Sc. in Nursing / GDN
Work Experience
Minimum of 3 months as a Registered Nurse in the last five years. Recent Graduates applying for registration for the first time are required to meet this eligibility criteria.
Any one of the below tests is acceptable.
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic): Overall 7, with 7 in listening, reading, and speaking; 6.5 in writing.
- Occupational English Test (OET): Minimum 350 in listening, writing and 360 in reading, and speaking.
- Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 60 and Speaking 76 with an Overall score of 63.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (TOEFL iBT): Minimum total score 91 with 22 in listening and reading, 23 in writing and 24 in speaking.
- Cambridge (C1 Advanced): Minimum overall score of 178 with 175 in listening, 179 in reading, 180 in writing and 194 in speaking.
- Cambridge (C2 Proficiency): Minimum overall score of 185 in listening, reading, and speaking; minimum 176 in writing.
Clubbing scores are acceptable, but note that two test sittings must not be more than 12 months apart. Please check eligibility of your clubbing scores.
- You achieve a minimum overall score of 7 in each sitting.
- You achieve a minimum score of 7 in each component for listening, reading and speaking, and a minimum score of 6.5 for writing across the two sittings.
- When using two test sittings, no score in any component of the test(s) for either test sitting is below 6.5.
The IELTS One Skill Retake allows eligible test takers to re-sit one component of the test within a 60-day period if all other components and certain requirements are met. Successful completion of an IELTS One Skill Retake is not considered an additional test sitting by National Boards; however, if you are relying on results from two test sittings and an IELTS One Skill Retake, all three of these tests must have been completed within a 12-month period.
- You are tested in all four components in each sitting, and
- You achieve the required minimum scores in each component for listening, reading, writing and speaking, and
- When using two test sittings, no score in any component of the test(s) for either test sitting is below:
- 320 for listening.
- 340 for reading.
- 350 for writing.
- 350 for speaking.
- A minimum overall score of 63 is achieved in each sitting, and
- You achieve the required minimum scores in each of the communicative skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking across the two sittings, and
- When using two test sittings, no score in any of the communicative skills for either test sitting is below:
- 53 for listening.
- 54 for reading.
- 60 for writing.
- 66 for speaking.
- A minimum total score of 91 is achieved in each sitting, and
- You achieve the required minimum scores for listening, reading, writing and speaking across the two sittings, and
- When using two test sittings, no score in any of the test sitting sections is below:
- 19 for listening.
- 19 for reading.
- 23 for writing.
- 22 for speaking.
- You are tested in all four components in each sitting.
- You achieve the required minimum scores in each component for listening, reading, writing and speaking across the two sittings.
- When using two test sittings, no score in any component of the test(s) for either test sitting is below:
- 168 for listening.
- 168 for reading.
- 180 for writing.
- 187 for speaking.
