How Can Indian Students Get Free Education in the UK through Scholarships?
by Arunachalam
With its esteemed colleges, cutting-edge research, and unmatched culture, the United Kingdom draws in scores of international students, particularly Indian students. Pursuing a degree in this wonderful location presents an option for Indian students looking to continue their education overseas without a significant financial burden to get top-notch education for free.
Coming to the question: is education really free in the United Kingdom? Just so you know, there are no universities in the UK that provide free education to foreign students, especially Indian students. To help cover the expenditure of their education, students may be qualified for fully financed scholarships, grants, or loans. In this blog we will learn about various UK’s fully funded scholarships to help you to cover your cost of studying in the UK.
British Chevening Scholarship
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office funds the competitive Chevening Scholarship, which is available to applicants from over 140 nations, including India. These grants offer financial assistance for enrolling in a full-time Master's programme at any UK university.
The scholarship pays for living expenses, a round-trip ticket in economy class, as well as other grants and allowances. Every year, applications for the scholarship must be received by November 6th.
The following criteria must be satisfied by applicants in order to be eligible for the Chevening Scholarship:
- Possess citizenship in one of the 162 nations included on the Chevening eligibility list.
- Agree to spend at least two years in their home country after the scholarship time is up.
- Two years or more of work experience is required.
- Get a letter of acceptance from a UK university.
- Substantiate their English language proficiency.
Gates Cambridge Scholarship
One of the most sought-after options for Indian students in the UK is the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. It is provided by the University of Cambridge and honours students who excel in the classroom and have the potential to make it big.
Foreign nationals who want to study at Cambridge for a Ph.D., MLit, MSc, or one-year postgraduate degree can apply for the scholarship. Tuition, travel costs, living expenses, family expenditures, and fieldwork are all fully covered by the award.
For US students, the application deadline is October 10; for students from other countries, it is December 5.
The following requirements must be satisfied in order to qualify for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship:
The candidate must be a national of a country other than the United Kingdom.
The candidate must be submitting an application to the University of Cambridge for a full-time Ph.D., MLit, MSc, or one-year postgraduate study.
Warwick Chancellor’s International Scholarship
International students admitted into a Ph.D. programme at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom are eligible to compete in the postgraduate research competition known as the Warwick Chancellor's Scholarship.
The scholarship offers a maintenance allowance of £15,044 (INR 1497908) per year for 3.5 years in addition to paying the full tuition expenses, up to a maximum of £22,860 (INR 2,276,135). All University of Warwick Ph.D. students, regardless of their field of study, are eligible for this grant.
The Warwick Chancellor's Scholarship has an annual deadline of January 18th.
Clarendon Fund Scholarship
Although less well-known than the Chevening Scholarship, the University of Oxford in the UK offers a very distinguished award called the Clarendon Scholarship. Almost 140 scholarships are given each year to international students who have excelled academically and have shown promise.
All full-time graduate and master's programmes are eligible, but PG diploma and certificate programmes are not. The scholarship pays for all education and tuition costs as well as a living expense stipend of £14,777 (INR 1,471,323) every year for the length of the programme.
Candidates must possess a strong academic record and exhibit promising output as graduate students in order to be considered. Each year, January 25th is the application deadline for scholarships.
The following requirements must be satisfied in order to qualify for the Warwick Chancellor's Scholarship:
The candidate must be admitted into one of the University of Warwick's Ph.D. programmes in any field.
Applicants in their first year of a doctoral programme at Warwick are also eligible to apply.
There are no nation-specific restrictions, however the applicant must be an international student from outside of UK.
Westminster International Scholarship
For students from developing nations who have been admitted to a full-time Master's degree, the University of Westminster in the UK offers scholarships known as the Westminster International Scholarship (excluding MBA). The scholarship pays for all living costs, travel to and from London, as well as tuition fees. Scholarship applications must be submitted every year on October 13th.
Applicants must fulfil the following criteria in order to be eligible for the Westminster International Scholarship:
Origin from one of the designated developing nations for the scholarship
Acceptance into the University of Westminster's full-time master's programme.
