What are the most common NCLEX mistakes and what you should do to avoid them
by Arunachalam
Top Tips to Advance in Your Nursing Career
Every graduating nurse is aware that passing the NCLEX is the last requirement before becoming an RN. Every RN must pass this demanding exam to ensure they are competent before beginning their career. Failure entails having to retake the exam or, in the worst situation, never achieving your professional objective of becoming an RN. However, in this blog we will discuss some common mistakes that you tend to make and how to prevent them.
Delay in taking the test
The largest error that students make is to put off taking their NCLEX exams too long after graduation and risk losing momentum. It is a well-known fact that students wish to delay it by several months so they can study during that period. Unfortunately, a lot of the knowledge acquired in school might be forgotten during that period.
You should begin the process as soon as you graduate because it takes some time to complete all the paperwork and receive your testing date. The ideal time frame is within 4-5 weeks of graduation. Schedule as much as possible throughout that time period.
Neglecting reading the questions well
It is also observed that students fail to read each question in its entirety. Because the stakes are so high, pupils just breeze over the questions because they are so anxious. They are aware that the test is timed. This exam is adaptive. Your response to one question will have an impact on others. This could be really distressing. It’s crucial to carefully read the question, reflect on it for a while, and then continue. Avoid overthinking.
Bad Study Techniques
Just before a test, students frequently attempt to prepare for the exam hurriedly. This error can be made in a few different ways. You can overstudy, answering numerous questions daily, or you can overdo it the night before the test by staying up all night. Neither is guaranteed to be successful. Instead, make a well-organized study schedule for the weeks leading up to the test. The ideal approach is to incorporate simulation exams into your study schedule.
Ignoring to take care of yourself
Take care of oneself the day before the exam by using that time to relax. Pause your study session. Try to get some exercise, eat healthy, and get a decent night’s sleep. You can stay focused for the long hours ahead by feeding with a good meal and yes, caffeine, on the day of the exam.
Panicking
While taking the test, you become anxious because you believe that all of your answers are incorrect. You get overcome with anxiety and fear and begin to panic. Be not disheartened! Based on the experiences of several students who took the test it is ascertained that most of the students do not feel confident about any of the questions.
NCLEX tips and tricks
Let us look at some of the tips and tricks to be successful in your NCLEX exam.
Use all the resources at your disposal
For preparing to take the NCLEX and nursing boards, there are several resources available. You should find the right resources that you find most effective.
Always keep trying
You try out and fail the test. What’s next? Make a new test date. You have 45 days to retake the test if you failed it, but it is better that you should do so in the time frame of 2- to 3 months. You now have some time to refocus and formulate your plan. You are approaching this situation with more information and experience. Go ahead, try your best, and answer each question as it is posed. Most essential, treat yourself well. This is a demanding test. It’s frightening. But keep in mind that you are among friends.
Have confidence in yourself
Bypassing the NCLEX, you may attest to your professional proficiency as an RN. It’s an accomplishment to be happy about. Your chances of success might be increased by being aware of the typical NCLEX errors and the best approaches to prevent them. Be mindful that you are not alone. All of your co-workers have been there. They are eagerly anticipating your enlistment.
Give NCLEX the first preference before you start working
Many newly graduated nurses land their first job before passing the NCLEX. However, the stress of beginning a nursing career and studying for the boards can be very overwhelming. Graduate nurses are advised to concentrate on the exam and then begin a new employment, if possible.
