What Skillsets Do You Need to Become a Successful Nursing Assistant?
by Antony Thejewel

If you’re interested in a job as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), you may have concerns about the specific CNA competencies you need to be successful in the role. Indeed, it takes a lot of skillsets to excel in any healthcare profession, and a CNA career is no different. So, whether you’ve recently completed training to become a CNA or you’re currently working in the profession, in this blog we have listed the most important qualities that you need to be an efficient CNA.
Strong Attention to Detail
Certified nursing assistants should possess the quality of strong attention to detail. They work every day with data, patient charts, and paperwork comprising pages of essential health information that they must properly understand and record.
Moreover, a Certified Nursing Assistant must be very aware of their patients' nonverbal cues and watch for any changes in their physical or emotional well-being. CNAs provide the most frequent and direct patient care within the nursing profession; observing these small details about a patient's health might save lives.
Excellent Communication Skills
Effective communication is essential for a profession as a certified nursing assistant. Nursing assistants deal closely with many diverse groups, from patients and their family members to physicians, nurses, physical therapists, and social workers.
Since CNAs deal with such a diversity of people, they must have great communication skills to know how and when to speak most effectively to fulfil each person’s specific requirements. For example, CNAs may need to talk slowly and in layman’s words to comfort and explain while speaking with their patients. With physicians and nurses, a CNA typically employs medical vocabulary and may even offer medical-specific summaries.
Good written communication skills are also a prerequisite for CNAs, who need to communicate via clear and succinct notes when reporting and documenting facts regarding a patient’s welfare.
Knowledge of Medical Terminology
In order for the doctor to create an accurate and effective treatment plan, certified nursing assistants (CNAs) must communicate patient information using the appropriate medical terminology since they serve as a bridge between the patient and their healthcare team.
To adhere to proper safety regulations and effectively interact with other healthcare professionals, certified nursing assistants (CNAs) should be familiar with the terminology related to infections, conditions, and fundamental medical terms.
Patience
The virtue of patience is one of the qualities that a CNA should possess since nursing assistants are accountable for giving ongoing comfort and care. CNAs typically work with sick individuals who may be irritated due to their medical concerns. In rare situations, older patients may be confused, fearful, hostile, or sceptical of their environment and the very persons trying to help them.
By staying patient and retaining a calm and supportive tone, CNAs may give the best possible care without escalating an already tough situation.
Empathy and compassion
The qualities of empathy and compassion are necessary for any sort of healthcare work and more so for nursing assistants. Successful CNAs apply these two traits regularly, especially while working in care homes.
To deliver care that genuinely has a favourable influence on their patients, a CNA should have empathy for what others are going through and compassion to build a compassionate bedside protocol that puts patients at rest. These traits enable CNAs to emotionally connect with and assist their patients in distress.
Flexibility
For CNAs, every day is unique; some days may be smooth sailing, while others may be quite challenging. And, with CNA shortages around the country, nursing assistants may be requested to perform weekend shifts, alter schedules, or work more hours than first intended.
Working day in and day out with ill and elderly individuals also demands great flexibility. A strategy or care approach that works for one patient may not work for another; therefore, CNAs must rely on their ingenuity and flexibility to adapt to ever-shifting personalities and goals. An important quality for CNAs is the ability to be adaptable, professional, and committed no matter what.
Optimism
During the nursing assistant job, CNAs unavoidably run into various tough, occasionally bad circumstances. However, it’s crucial to be energetic and positive—this positivity spreads to patients and coworkers and helps build an overall healthy and pleasant workplace.
Plus, finding the best in every scenario and not allowing the bad days to get them down can help to promote excellent overall mental health and reduced burnout for CNAs.
In conclusion, a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance, individuals who complete this program will have the knowledge and practical skills needed to work as nursing assistance in a variety of healthcare settings, including community health clinics, hospitals, and assisted living homes.
