Does the Nursing Field Appeal to You? Important Questions That You Should Ask Yourself
by Antony Thejewel

If you are contemplating whether nursing is suitable for you, you may find it challenging to assess the profession's true nature from an external perspective. Regardless of prior experience, selecting a career is a significant decision. Pursuing a nursing career entails years of education, substantial student debt, and a comprehensive lifestyle transformation. The decision to pursue a nursing career hinges on your self-assessment of suitability for the profession and the potential for long-term fulfilment. Is nursing suitable for me? In this blog we have provided some questions to ask yourself before deciding whether to become a nurse. There is no definitive answer, so consider them as references only.
Are you interested in the field of healthcare?
One of the most common reasons many of us first choose nursing is that we are always attracted by the hospital setting. The nursing profession demands you to spend up to 12 hours at a time inside a hospital. It’s generally observed that hospitals tend to build a robust internal culture with their own language and social cues. So, make sure you are comfortable with that setting!
How do you feel about spending the day with people?
Beyond particular research-based occupations, most nursing careers will need you to communicate with people continuously. What’s more, most of the individuals will likely be in pain, worried, or bewildered—and they will be turning to you for solutions.
The happy and satisfied nurses are good at thinking on their feet, like switching tasks constantly, enjoy feeling needed. They like blending into the background rather than seeking the spotlight, like getting to know new people and feel compelled to stand up for the most vulnerable. Not all of these features are definitely required at all hospital units.
How good are you with disagreeable people?
If you are taking an oath to help everyone to the best of your abilities, at some point you will be comforting someone who is simply a bad person. Depending on where you wind up working, this may include dangerous criminals, abusive patients, blatantly racist family members, or even plain impolite individuals.
Are you alright with blood, sweat, and faeces?
Not all nursing occupations are bedside positions. If you find your way into research, public health, or become a school nurse, you might not have to deal with body fluids on a regular basis. Still, to obtain these jobs, you will need to endure nursing school, followed by a couple of years of experience on a hospital floor.
How good are you at managing pressure?
Most of the basic treatments done by nurses are dangerous if done wrong. On most days, your ability to stay cool and respond fast can make the difference between “just a scare,” a “near miss,” or “serious long-term injury.” That’s a great lot of pressure to cope with. Most skilled nurses can tiptoe between life and death without losing a beat, but it takes years of work to reach that position.
Nursing also comes with a lot of emotional burden. Dealing with pain and sorrow every day takes resilience. Some nurses become burnt out or just get desensitised to it.
How intellectually oriented are you?
Is it hard to become a nurse? Yes, especially if you have always shied away from math or science-related topics. Nursing encompasses both empathy and compassion and scientific knowledge. Before reaching nursing school, you will have to complete numerous stringent science requirements, such as chemistry or anatomy and physiology.
Once you start nursing school, you will have two sorts of subjects: those that require you to learn and acquire a lot of knowledge very quickly (like pathophysiology or pharmacology) and those that consistently test your critical thinking abilities. After finishing all your courses and clinicals, you will still need to pass your licensure test (NCLEX).
Are you up for graduate school or furthering your education?
Most of the best-paid and cushier nursing employment will need you to continue training after your BSN. Many hospitals may give tuition refunds and special loans to help you earn additional credentials, but you will still need to pass the programs and the extra licensure examinations. If you want to give the best possible treatment for your patients, you will need to repeat that class or update how you do certain operations.
Conclusion
Deciding whether nursing is for you will involve a lot of contemplation. As a profession, nursing provides tremendous growth potential, but it comes at the expense of hard hours and plenty of courses.
Some people thrive in healthcare and appreciate keeping active and feeling wanted—and if you are one of them, nursing may be a good choice for you. If there are doubts still lingering in your mind, feel free to contact our experts at MWT Education Consultancy.
