What is a resume?

A resume is a document that highlights your qualifications, skills and work experience. Are you an international student looking to build a global career? Things to remember when writing a resume for a job in Canada

If you have a basic structure and a checklist of the information you need to include in your resume, writing a resume won't be a difficult task! Here are the guidelines you should follow when writing a resume.

  • Your contact information

Include all required details, including your full name, current address, primary phone number and email address.

  • Objective, profile and summary

This section is optional and is most effective if you know the specific industry or type of work you are interested in, or if you are transitioning from one career to another, if you want to include it, state your career goals clearly and concisely, or summarise your work experience.

  • Your education

Begin with the most recent degree you have earned or are pursuing and list additional degrees in reverse chronological order. Include your institution and its location by city and state; degree level; major, minor, or concentration; and month and year of graduation or expected completion. If you studied abroad, include the institution, location, academic term, and concentration. Scholarships, academic awards and other honours may be included in this section or listed separately. Relevant courses, class projects and independent studies can also be included, which often help to strengthen your credentials if you have less relevant work experience.

  • Your previous experience

Highlight relevant experience you have gained through part-time and full-time employment, paid and unpaid internships, volunteering and leadership positions in student organisations. Create separate titles and list your experiences in accordance with them if your experience naturally fits into two different categories, related ones and other. For each entry, list the organisation and its location by city and state, the position title, and the dates of employment by month/year.

Write concise statements, not full sentences, and use strong verbs and specific details to describe your actions and results. Demonstrate to employers how you applied the selected knowledge, skills and abilities to achieve the desired results. Where possible, quantify your results to convey the scope and significance of the project.

  • Mention your skills

It is highly recommended that you include this section in your CV. If you list a variety of skills, such as computers, languages and research, simply use the heading "Skills". If your skills are all of one type, title the section accordingly, e.g. "Computer Skills". If your skills support your career objective more effectively than other parts of your CV, place this section above the less compelling sections.

  • Education, certifications and licences

If you have completed training or obtained certifications or licences that relate to your career objective, title the section accordingly and include key details.

  • Your professional activities

A description or list of your achievements, extracurricular activities, or professional associations will help employers learn about your interests, motivations, and skills. For any leadership positions held, include the full name of the organisation, the title of the position, the dates of membership and a brief description of your key achievements. For membership involvement, include the full name of the organisation, dates of membership and activities in which you have participated that relate to your career objective.
