How nursing plays a big role in containing pandemics, national emergencies and natural disasters?
by Arunachalam
Nurses play a vital role in emergency preparedness at the national and international levels, through steps such as detailed planning, community education and awareness, combined with direct care in the event of a disaster. In fact, nursing in every country is strengthened by training nurses to participate in almost all phases of disaster preparedness and response.
Nurses are not only helpful within the institution they serve in assessing and planning for hazards before a disaster, but they are also helpful in responding when a crisis occurs. When recruiting nurses, their ability to work with vulnerable populations is considered very important. It is a prerequisite that nurses are well trained to respond to the needs of patients who are facing the dangers of emergencies, epidemics and disasters.
Unfortunately, health disasters and epidemics are becoming more frequent, and our ability to deal with them is lagging behind. The pandemic will go down in history as one of the most significant years of a global health emergency. The spread of the coronavirus tested everyone in every capacity, but most of all healthcare professionals.
It was only with the expert help of doctors and nurses that we were able to manage such a huge pandemic. Forgetting their own safety, nurses were constantly on duty. They ensured the physical, mental and emotional healing of patients affected by the Corona virus.
In this blog, we will look at the role of nursing in dealing with emergencies, epidemics and disasters by understanding different factors, one by one.
Nursing and emergency preparedness
As the first point of contact, healthcare professionals, especially nurses, are inordinately involved in the processes that lead to emergency preparedness and recovery. There are a multitude of steps that need to be taken, so nurses consider assessing their own skills, evaluating all the possible threats that could affect a community, and adopting strategies to help prepare for the worst.
This is done by educating the community about possible health threats and taking steps to prepare for important changes. Planning to administer the right medicines or vaccinations to patients and creating a disaster management plan are some of the basic things that are important. It is also important for nurses to enhance their own disaster management and preparedness training by considering courses, seminars and exercises that will ensure their preparedness.
Healthcare in a disaster environment is different from everyday care. It is therefore important that nurses around the world are trained with the right knowledge of disaster nursing.
Public awareness and education during health emergencies
If we look at each part of the world individually, each has different and unique risks. While some cities may be highly vulnerable to airborne and waterborne diseases, others may face natural disasters such as cyclones, earthquakes, etc. Regardless of the type of hazard that may lurk in these countries, they need to be able to manage the circumstances effectively.
In addition, the possibility of a terrorist- or crime-related health disaster, such as a mass shooting, needs to be considered and addressed. This is because, in many places, the risks of emergencies and disasters tend to overlap and remain almost all types. For example, the bushfires in Australia resulted in mass casualties. In addition, when disasters strike, crowded communities, especially the poor, are much more vulnerable to the spread of disease.
At such times, it is important to educate the public so that maximum attention can be paid to health promotion. Some of the steps that can be taken include well-planned seminars that teach people how to cope with problems. In addition, nurses work with the community to implement a disaster preparedness plan that can further assist the most vulnerable communities.
Comprehensive role of nurses
Nurses play an important role in maximising health and health-related experiences. This role extends to identifying and addressing people's needs during disasters. During disasters, nurses are well placed to reassure patients that they will be able to cope with the disaster situation.
By facilitating effective communication and coordination with members of the health care team, patients and their families during a disaster, nurses provide the means to overcome difficult circumstances. It is well known that clear communication is necessary for effective disaster planning and response. Therefore, the overall role of nurses is very important through detailed formal and informal communication and documentation.
Conclusion
Whenever an emergency or disaster strikes, nurses play an effective role in interdisciplinary teams, taking charge of prevention and healing. Nurses are at the forefront of disaster prevention, preparedness, response, recovery and evaluation. Not only are they historically known for integrating the psychological, social and family aspects of care, but they also play an indelible role in the effective functioning of health systems during emergencies.
