Back in Action: US Resumes F1 Visa Processing Globally with Stricter Digital Checks

June 26, 2025

The U.S. government has resumed F1 student visa processing worldwide, including F (academic), M (vocational), and J (exchange visitor) categories, after a temporary pause of nearly three weeks. This update was confirmed in the U.S. Department of State announcement released on June 18, 2025. The pause aimed to enhance digital screening for U.S. student visas. The U.S. remains devoted to welcoming international students, particularly from places like India, but seeks transparency and digital integrity from applicants.

Indian students applying for U.S. study visas in 2025 should focus on academic, financial, and digital preparedness.

The U.S. has a new visa screening system which includes expanded digital screening for social media, online behavior, and digital history, manual review of declared digital content, slower application processing, and a security-first approach. This applies to all non-immigrant categories, with students under F, M, and J visas being significantly impacted. All applicants must now declare their active social media handles in the DS-160 visa form, including platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, and any other used in the last 5 years.

During visa processing, make profiles public, ensuring consistency in name, education, interests, and job history. Applicants are advised to clean up their social media posts and avoid controversial content to avoid any issues during the interview process.

The changes in the 2025 U.S. visa interview process include preparation for questions about social media accounts and recent profile activity. The US remains committed to welcoming students from India and beyond for the F1 visa journey. A new era in the student visa process is highlighted, focusing on digital presence, course clarity, and thorough preparation.
