Exciting news for International Students planning to study in New Zealand

July 18, 2025

New Zealand has announced an ambitious new strategy to strengthen its position as one of the world’s leading destinations for international students. Education and Immigration Minister Erica Stanford unveiled the “International Education – Going for Growth” plan, which targets a doubling of the sector’s value—from NZ$3.6 billion in 2024 to NZ$7.2 billion by 2034.

The strategy also outlines clear enrolment goals: growing international student numbers from 83,700 in 2024 to 105,000 by 2027, and reaching 119,000 by 2034.

A central aim of the plan is to boost New Zealand’s visibility in global education markets. The government seeks to increase awareness of New Zealand as a study destination to 42% by 2027, and 44% by 2034.

Effective November 2025, significant changes will be introduced to enhance the appeal of studying in New Zealand:

  • Eligible international students will be allowed to work up to 25 hours per week during academic terms (increased from 20 hours).
  • Students enrolled in exchange or study abroad programs at Level 7 or above will also gain in-study work rights.
  • The government is exploring a six-month short-term work visa for graduates who don’t initially qualify for a post-study work visa.
  • Plans are in place to streamline multi-year student visa applications, reducing administrative delays and improving the student experience.

The policy update comes as other traditional study destinations like Australia, Canada, and the United States are tightening international student rules. New Zealand sees this as an opportunity to welcome more students, while supporting its own economy and workforce.

In 2024 alone, international students in New Zealand spent an average of NZ$ 45,000 per year, contributing significantly to local businesses, tourism, and job creation.

For aspiring international students, New Zealand is quickly becoming a more attractive and supportive destination. The enhanced work rights, simplified visa processes, and a strong focus on student experience signal the country’s commitment to welcoming global talent.

If you’re planning to study abroad, now is the perfect time to explore opportunities in New Zealand.
