New Criteria for Canadian Study Permits via SDS Program: IELTS Section Scores No Longer Mandatory

Effective August 10, 2023, International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test takers applying for study permits through Canada's Student Direct Stream (SDS) program will no longer be required to achieve a minimum score of 6.0 bands in each individual section. The update, introduced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), signifies a significant shift towards a more comprehensive assessment of applicants' language abilities.

Under the revised regulations, IELTS Academic test takers in Canada seeking study permits via the SDS program will need to attain an overall band score of 6.0 to qualify, eliminating the previous demand for a minimum score of 6.0 bands in each individual section. This change reflects a positive transformation in the approach to evaluating candidates, focusing on their comprehensive language skills rather than isolated section scores.

Commenting on the alteration, Piyush Kumar, Regional Director - South Asia and Mauritius, expressed optimism about the change's impact on aspiring students worldwide. Kumar stated, "This update represents a positive shift towards recognizing the comprehensive abilities of test-takers rather than focusing solely on individual band scores. We believe this change will provide greater opportunities for talented students worldwide to pursue their educational goals in Canada and also reflects authorities’ confidence in IELTS."

The modification aims to streamline the application process for prospective immigrants, particularly Indian students, and facilitate their pursuit of higher education in Canada. Previously, a minimum score of 6 bands in each individual section was mandatory. Students and professionals seeking to study or work in English-speaking countries like Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and others must pass the IELTS test, which evaluates their writing, speaking, and listening skills.

The IELTS exam holds particular significance in India as the country's most popular English Language Proficiency Test. The amended criteria are expected to make IELTS an even more appealing choice for Indian students interested in the Canada SDS program. The Student Direct Stream (SDS) category provides a streamlined study permit application process for international students aspiring to enroll in authorized post-secondary institutions in Canada.

The SDS program has consistently offered eligible students an expedited pathway to study in Canada. By simplifying immigration procedures, it ensures a smoother transition for students into Canadian educational institutions. Notably, the IELTS academic and general training test fees have recently been adjusted to Rs. 16,250.
