Ottawa, June 25, 2025 In a major update for your international student program, the Canadian government has changed the list of qualified programs for the post graduate work permit (PGWP), which brings extensive changes aimed at coordinating immigration paths with requirements for the country's labor market. To be eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP), international students in non-degree programs (programs other than bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees) must complete a program in an eligible field of study linked to jobs in long-term shortages, such as those being prioritized under Express Entry. This rule applies to students who applied for a study permit on or after November 1, 2024.
Efficiently, 119 new fields of study have been added to the PGWP qualification list, which marks one of the most important overalls in recent years.
Focus on labor market needs
The update list reflects the strategic attention of Canada, especially in high excellent areas, when addressed the lack of long -term skills in Canada. Recently to add important areas such as:
- Healthcare and social services: including nursing, medical laboratory technology and social work.
- Education: Early childhood education, teaching help and programs in related fields.
- Efficient trade: Professional training in carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and other essential trades.
"The changes are designed to ensure that international graduates are equipped with the most essential skills in the Canadian economy," said immigration spokesman Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). "By coordinating educational routes with work priorities, we aim to support both new people and Canadian industries."
A strategic immigration migration
The change is expected to streamline future immigration through Canada's express entry system, which prefers graduates in companies facing a rapid reduction. This step outlines Canada's commitment to strengthen the workforce and support important areas such as health care and education.
Institutions and students are encouraged to consult an official update list and plan accordingly.
